Jornal de Miami recebe prêmio por cobertura da América Latina (Miami Herald)

Herald honored for coverage of Latin America

The Miami Herald's Latin America staff Wednesday was awarded the Arthur Ross Award for Distinguished Reporting and Analysis on Foreign Affairs by the American Academy of Diplomacy.
''The Miami Herald Latin America staff has led the way in shaking us out of indifference to a once obscure world that is now immediately part of our own,'' said the citation, which came with a $7,500 cash prize.

'Scotty Reston once wrote that `Americans will do anything for Latin America except read about it.' That will no longer do, as economic and psychological barriers fall throughout the hemisphere, and as Latin Americans in record numbers contribute so much directly to our own society,'' the citation read.

''While too many U.S. news organizations reduce their Latin America coverage, The Herald maintains a top-flight . . . staff focused on news from the region. They have become interpreters of ideas and politics without peer between the hemisphere's twin cultures, the ``writers to turn to'' to understand U.S.-Latin American relations.
``This is the best of journalism . . . and of diplomacy.''

Arthur Ross is former vice chairman of the United Nations Association of the U.S.A.
